2016 Piero Benevelli Barolo Ravera di Monforte

4 items left

Piedmonte, Italy

Phenomenal fruit taken from a 2 hectare vineyard planted in 1960. Aged in second-passage barriques for one year, then in 10-year-old oak botti (40 hL, 20 hL, and 15 hL) for 15 months, aged 8-10 months in bottle before release. Dark ruby red in color. The nose is full-bodied with hints of violet, plum, vanilla, cinnamon and licorice. The Benevelli Ravera is an absolute joy to drink once it opens up. The tannins are pleasantly firm and structured, and the long, fruit-driven finish illustrates the virtue of Massimo's viticultural philosophy. This wine will age gracefully and will reward patience. Pair with a truffle risotto or when bottle - aged, a venison stew.

Massimo Benevelli is an old head on young shoulders. Massimo is quiet and shy. When he talks, he talks for a reason. The same goes with the wines he makes. They are a reflection of Massimo and his Langhe Nebbiolo, Bricco Ravera Barbera and Monforte Barolo, and all share his stamp. They are not tricked up. They are not smothered in oak. They speak of Monforte, they speak of Massimo and importantly they speak of the vintage. They are not trying to be something they are not.

The wines from Ravera have the distinction of combining the structural strength of neighboring Serralunga d’Alba with the concentration and richness of Bussia and the other crus further north.
