Alsace, France

A unique plot in the monopole Clos des Capucins vineyard composed of sandy silt soil on granite pebbles. The grapes growing in this terroir ripen much earlier, producing wines with complex aromatics and a powerful concentration.Hand-picked at optimum maturity to reinforce the aromatic expression and body of the wines. Gently pressed in whole clusters in pneumatic presses then fermentation with indigenous yeasts (an element of the terroir that enhances depth and complexity in the wines) in old oak vats. A beautiful nose with aromas of white blossoms and notes of lime. It shows a fine, delicate entry and a nice concentration mid-palate. Offers a wonderful combination of crisp Granny Smith apples and a fine minerality. Juicy with a long, lingering finish. Pair with Thai crab cakes or lemon-roasted chicken.

Domaine Weinbach is universally regarded as one of the greatest producers of Alsace and therefore by proxy, one of the greatest ‘aromatic’ Domaines in the world. Yet it is a Domaine that remains incredibly grounded, refreshingly free from overarching self-importance and pomposity, and it is a Domaine that produces an endless stream of wines that are as delicious as they are profound. It is today run by the Faller sisters Catherine and Laurence. They have 27 hectares of vineyards, predominantly Grand Cru, the most famous of which is Schlossberg. The Fallers have farmed organically for some time however in 2005 they converted all of their vines to biodynamics. The wines of Domaine Weinbach represent some of the greatest aromatic white wines being made today and we recommend them to you without hesitation. Power and purity are the hallmark of this Domaine. These wines come exclusively from great vineyards and are made with the greatest of care. While their prices are not inconsiderate, they compare favourably with white burgundies and the finest German Rieslings of equivalent quality.
