What makes this Domaine so good are the fantastic vineyard sites, high up on the hill behind Cairanne, looking out to Gigondas and down towards Châteauneuf du Pape, and of course, the hard work and talent of brothers Frédéric and François Alary also helps. The main part of the Domaine is to the north-east of Cairanne, 200m from the hills of Rasteau in a zone commonly known as ‘la Montagne’. The soil is very stony with yellow clay on the surface and blue clay deeper down. It also contains a high percentage of limestone. The vines are managed organically, cultivated without pesticides or chemical fertilisers and some trials are now occurring with biodynamics. Harvesting is done by hand and the initial sorting is done in the vineyard with a second triage carried out at the sorting table. A gravity-fed fermentation cellar allows the fruit to be handled gently, contributing to an elegance rare in the Southern Rhône, especially with wines that have this much Mourvèdre. The wines are bottled on the estate without fining or filtration. All these factors, as well as the high proportion of old vine Mourvèdre in the vineyards, makes this one of the Southern Rhone’s finest and most distinctive domaines.
