Margaret River, Western Australia

This is Domaine Naturaliste's middle tier Chardonnay but it drinks well above this level. The fruit is off a sustainably farmed vineyard which is in the cool southern end of Margaret River and produces a style of Chardonnay that has a fantastic balance of freshness and hedonistic pleasure. Restricted malolactic fermentation, battonage fortnightly to add complexity and texture through “sur lie” whilst retaining purity of character and freshness. The wine is both fermented and matured in one third new French oak barriques for 10 months. This Chardonnay is all about flesh and weight but still remains very fresh, it's layers are carefully built with zingy grapefruit, juicy apple, white peach and cashew making it a very complex wine for this level. Match with a bowl of good olives or a herb butter roast chicken.

Domaine Naturaliste Vineyard is located in the heart of the highly acclaimed Wilyabrup sub-region of Margaret River in Western Australia. The vines are 7 km inland from the magnificent Indian ocean. The gravelly loam soils provide a stable foundation for our 20 year old grapevines, allowing them to achieve balance.

The maritime climate is characterised by cool wet winters, and long gentle summers, which makes the area a pristine environment for growing wine. Bruce Dukes knows that truly great wine is created from the ground up. Crediting his time spent studying Agricultural Science at the University of Western Australia with shaping his values and practices, Bruce approaches winemaking with the passion of an Agronomist. Beginning with a deep understanding of soils and sustainable farming practices, it is Bruce’s belief that a holistic approach reaps the greatest rewards, both for the wine and the environment.
