The 2019 vintage in Austria is going to be one to remember! The whites in particular are stunning as they are ripe and medium-bodied but show fantastic acidity. The fruit for Emmerich Knoll Grüner Veltliner Federspiel comes from flat land on alluvial, sandy soils at an altitude of 220m. Selectively hand harvested, the grapes are slowly airbag pressed as whole clusters, with some skin contact. Fermented with cultured and natural yeast in a mixture of cask and stainless steel tank from 500 to 5,000 litres, depending on batch quantity. Fermented for 5- 10 days at temperatures between 20 and 22 degrees. Lees aged for three months but no less stirring. Racked twice all up, and given a light filtration before bottling. On the nose it's beautifully spicy and herbal with whiffs of mandarin peel. The palate has fantastic weight and texture showing tangerine, ginger, pepper, apple and a touch of green capsicum. Match it with Wiener Schnitzel with grilled asparagus, tonkatsu pork or a Vietnamese chicken salad.

The winery uses exclusively old oak foudres and implements a winemaking philosophy that places varietal site expression at the forefront. Emmerich Knoll senior is a thoughtful, quiet man; the opposite of Emmerich junior, cosmopolitan and modern in his approach. The Knolls have holdings in all the best sites, as exemplified by their success in the now infamous UK tasting where an aged Knoll Grüner beat a field of Grand Cru white Burgundies. The unmistakable labels bearing the image of Saint Urban, the patron saint of winegrowing, are a reminder that tradition is the watchword here. But what isn’t so obvious is that Emmerich Knoll’s wines are sheer joy to drink — now or far into the future.
